Under the direction of renowned Spanish conductor Carlos Domínguez-Nieto, the program opens with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s powerful overture to Ruy Blas – a passionate musical commentary on the play of the same name by Victor Hugo. Composed in just a few days, the overture took on a life of its own in the concert hall and is now considered one of Mendelssohn’s most characterful orchestral works.
A highlight of the evening is the Symphonie espagnole for violin and orchestra by Édouard Lalo – a virtuosic masterpiece of French musical artistry, infused with Spanish spirit. Full of rhythmic brilliance, dance-like lightness, and romantic depth, it was composed for the violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. Soloist Yuki Manuela Janke, concertmaster of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, captivates with precision and expressive power.
The evening concludes with a rare rediscovery: the Symphony in D major by the Basque child prodigy Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, whose extraordinary talent earned him the posthumous nickname "the Spanish Mozart." At just 18 years old, Arriaga created a remarkably mature work full of melodic beauty and classical elegance.

Unter der Leitung des renommierten spanischen Dirigenten Carlos Domínguez-Nieto eröffnet Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdys kraftvolle Ouvertüre zu Ruy Blas das Programm – ein leidenschaftlicher musikalischer Kommentar zum gleichnamigen Drama von Victor Hugo. In nur wenigen Tagen komponiert, entwickelte die Ouvertüre ein Eigenleben im Konzertsaal und zählt heute zu Mendelssohns charaktervollsten Orchesterwerken.
Ein Höhepunkt des Abends ist die „Symphonie espagnole“ für Violine und Orchester von Édouard Lalo – ein virtuoses Meisterwerk französischer Klangkunst, durchdrungen von spanischem Esprit. Voller rhythmischer Brillanz, tänzerischer Leichtigkeit und romantischer Tiefe wurde es für den Geigenvirtuosen Pablo de Sarasate komponiert. Bajo la dirección del renombrado director español Carlos Domínguez-Nieto, se inaugura el programa con la poderosa obertura de Ruy Blas de Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, un apasionado comentario musical sobre el drama homónimo de Victor Hugo. Compuesta en solo unos días, la obertura desarrolló una vida propia en la sala de conciertos y hoy es considerada una de las obras orquestales más características de Mendelssohn.
Un punto culminante de la velada es la Sinfonía española para violín y orquesta de Édouard Lalo, una obra maestra virtuosa de la sonoridad francesa impregnada del espíritu español. Llena de brillantez rítmica, ligereza danzante y profundidad romántica, fue compuesta para el virtuoso violinista Pablo de Sarasate. La solista Yuki Manuela Janke, concertino de la Orquesta Estatal de Sajonia en Dresde, cautiva con su precisión y expresividad.
El programa culmina con un redescubrimiento raro: la sinfonía en re mayor del prodigioso compositor vasco Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, cuya extraordinaria habilidad le dio póstumamente el apodo de "Mozart español". The program includes John Williams’ Trumpet Concerto featuring soloist José Cayetano, and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances. The University of Guanajuato Symphony Orchestra (OSUG) holds a prominent place in Mexico’s musical landscape as one of the country’s most prestigious orchestral ensembles, with a strong international presence. Since its founding, renowned soloists and conductors have participated in the orchestra's programs, including Francesca Dego, Yuja Wang, the Brodsky Quartet, Shlomo Mintz, and Neeme Järvi, among others.
The concert will take place on Friday, September 26 at the Teatro Principal in Guanajuato, Mexico.
